Eruptive prominence in H-alpha
This eruptive prominence, seen here in the light of hydrogen alpha emission, occurred on June 20th 1989. Prominences that suddenly lift off from the Sun are called eruptive. Some of the material from the upper parts of an eruption may escape into inter-planetary space. The matter (mostly hydrogen gas) in the lower, brightest parts of the loop usually streams back down to the Sun. Posted on: 28 Feb, 2005
