Snow in the Midwest

The storm that dumped up to 10 inches of snow in the Midwest of the United States was not quite finished when this image was acquired on December 7, 2005; it continued eastward, dropping a similar amount all along the Eastern seaboard.

According to CNN, the storm was blamed for at least 10 deaths in Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, as well as 5 other fatalities in Kentucky. The storm was also blamed for the death of a child and injuries to 10 others when a plane slid off a runway at Chicago's Midway International Airport.

By mid-afternoon on December 9, 2005, the storm had reached Maine and was scheduled to move out to sea in the next 24 hours or so. Several places, including Indianapolis, Indiana and New York City, received record amounts for a 24 hour period.

In the Midwest, the snow was compounded by heavy winds of 32-64 kilometers per hour (20-40 miles per hour), reducing both the temperature and visibility, as well as creating large snowdrifts.
