Dozens of people were killed by wind-driven brush fires in northern Sicily in late August 2007. This image from the MODIS on NASA's Aqua satellite shows the island on August 22, 2007.
Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. Smoke from fires in the Nebrodi Mountains blows north over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
