The Nile River Delta

Several fires were visible in the Nile Delta in this image captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on October 28, 2007. Most of the fires in Egypt’s Nile Delta are north of Cairo, which sits at the point where the Nile River widens into the Delta, and is visible as a gray smudge in the higher resolutions of the image. There also appear to be jet contrails over the region.

The Nile is the longest river in the world, extending for about 6700 kilometers from its headwaters in the highlands of eastern Africa. The Sinai peninsula and Red Sea are on the right.
