Faroe, Shetland, and Orkney Island Groups

This image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on May 7, 2008, shows several island groups in the North Atlantic Ocean. In the top left are the Faroe Islands, which are equidistant between Iceland, Scotland and Norway, though they are considered a province of Denmark.

The Shetland Islands are on the right side of the image - they are part of Scotland. They are just north of the Orkney Islands, which are off the northern coast of Scotland. The Orkneys consist of over 70 islands, though only 20 or so have inhabitants. People have lived on the Orkney Islands for over 5,500 years and contains some of the best preserved and old Neolithic sites in Europe.
