Dust Storm in the Persian Gulf

Pale veils of tan dust drape across the northern Persian Gulf, kicked up by high winds from a storm on April 17, 2004. This true-color Aqua MODIS image was acquired on that same day. Red dots scattered throughout Kuwait and Iran mark locations were the MODIS instrument detected actively burning fires. Dust and sediments from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers create swirls of turquoise green in the waters of the Persian Gulf. At the upper edges of the image, touches of green in the valleys and mountains of the region mark the persence of spring vegetation.
