Dust Over the Red Sea

A large dust storm moves over the Red Sea in between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula on June 23, 2004. The storm appears to be blowing out of the eastern Nubian Desert of Sudan. This desert is often the source of airborne dust in this region. Below the dust, the Red Sea's waters remain dark blue and black. When large quantities of dust settle in the water, the watern turns shades of tan and green. This is often seen along the shoreline and at the mouths of rivers, where sediments occur most commonly. This is a true-color Aqua MODIS image.
