Winter has brought low seasonal temperatures to the southeastern United States, if not any snow. In this true-color Aqua MODIS image from December 20, 2004, small fires are scattered across the South. The fires, which are marked in bright red, stretch from southeastern Louisiana, through Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, and all the way to Florida. All throughout the scene, winter is evident in the subdued browns, tans, and greens. The only bright colors are the turquoise wash of sediment along the shores of Louisiana and Florida, and the bright white clouds floating over the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.
