Snow and ice recede from Newfoundland Island and the surrounding waters as springtime brings warmer temperatures to the Northern Hemisphere. This true-color Terra MODIS image from May 2, 2004, shows snow in a light layer covering the highlands and northern reaches of the island, while the lowlands and rocky coasts are already clear. Low clouds skim across the waters of the Northern Atlantic on the southern and eastern edges of the image, while sea ice swirls in thick white fields north of the island, just off the Labrador coastline. South of Labrador lie what used to be one of the best cod-fisheries in the world, but were closed in 2003 due to over-fishing.
