Mt. St. Helens

In the early evening of March 8, 2005, Washington State's Mt. St. Helens sent a plume of ash and smoke to 36,000 feet above sea level. The volcano has been showing signs of activity since waking from dormancy in late September of 2004. This Terra MODIS image was acquired just minutes before the lastest ash plume occured. Mt. St. Helens is the white snow-capped mountain on the left. Surrounding it are a number of small lakes, which are almost invisible in the deep green forests. To the south, just across the Oregon state border is Portland, a metropolitan city of 2.1 million covering over 450 square miles. In this image, it appears as a dark sprawling grey mass on the Columbia River.
