Officials to Propose High-Speed Rail Line

British officials who oppose the planned Heathrow Airport expansion say they will propose a high-speed rail line.
Plans for the $60 billion high-speed rail line will be announced next week, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.
Proponents of the rail line say the route would make it easier for travelers in Scotland and northern England to get to Heathrow. They say that would lower demand for connecting flights and reducing the need for airport expansion.
The rail line could be completed by 2030. The plan is backed by the 2M Group, a coalition of local authorities opposed to development plans at Heathrow.
We are delighted to publish these proposals because we want a debate. We have a government that can't see further than the next runway, said Edward Lister, leader of Wandsworth Council which is part of the 2M Group.
It's time for some imagination in U.K. transport planning. We don't pretend for one minute we have all the answers but at least we're asking the right questions, he said.
