Call to Fix Fuel Price and Save

Protect yourself against spiralling energy costs by fixing rates for gas and electricity now, says an independent watchdog.
Internet search engine uswitch.com says the way to combat escalating gas and electricity prices is to opt for a fixed rate.
Fixed price plans mean that the cost of energy per unit is set for a certain period of time - usually a year to 18 months.
Although initially this unit price can be more expensive than a supplier's standard unit rate, the household will continue to pay the same agreed unit rate for the duration of the agreement, even if energy prices soar.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "The worst has been confirmed. Coupled with the credit crunch and the ongoing battle to make their money go further, consumers should steel themselves for a winter of discontent - the days of cheap energy aren't just over, they now seem to be extinct. I would urge consumers to fix their energy prices now before it's too late."
uswitch.com's warning comes after a new report estimated domestic energy bills would raise by a massive 60 per cent.
Full time mum Vikki Wallington (32), says the price increases are very worrying.
"I know my mum has already started doing things to cut her bills down, and I know that if it came to it, we would rather wear extra clothes to keep warm than be faced with massive bills," said Miss Wallington, of Witham St Hughs.
The Echo has created a website called www.biggreenswitch.co.uk with hints to help you cut back on the cost of energy.
The site recommends simple measures, such as not leaving appliances on standby, and switching to energy saving light bulbs.
