The Authority for Electricity Regulation of Oman said that the country's government is planning to invite bids for the construction of a 1,000MW electricity generation and water desalination plant in Duqm, according to Reuters.

The new power plant is reported to be part of the $20 billion project to develop Duqm, with other key infrastructure such as an oil refinery, seaport and a ship repair yard are also being planned.

John Cunneen, executive director of the Authority for Electricity Regulation as quoted by Reuters, said: "This is going to be one of the biggest power plants in the country. Once consultants have been appointed for the job, then the bids will start. The project would be awarded on a build, own, operate and transfer basis."
