Bible Course Approved in Texas Schools

Posted on: Saturday, 19 July 2008, 12:00 CDT

Texas school districts were approved to give high school students the option of taking a Bible class without certain state regulations, school officials said.

State Board of Education members had debated whether they should create regulations for the class on the Bible endorsed by state legislators last year, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Board members said they were unsure whether they should permit 1,039 independent school districts to create the class on their own, following basic outlines from social studies and English courses.

Conservative board members took the argument in a 10-5 vote, the newspaper said.

Critics argue Friday's approval could lead to problems later down the road for public schools because of teachers who won't be able to avoid including their personal religious views in lessons.

The people who suffer will be the educators and the students, and the people who will foot the bill will be us the taxpayers, said Mark Chancey of Southern Methodist University.
