Young Citizens Win Awards
Posted on: Sunday, 20 July 2008, 00:00 CDT
Youngsters from Cockington, Hayes and Priory primary schools have been presented with the Torbay Civic Award.
They received their certificates from council chairman Cllr Michael Hytche at a ceremony at Oldway Mansion.
The award, founded as a preliminary to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, aims to encourage citizenship for 10 and 11 year olds.
Youngsters had to demonstrate active citizenship in their school communities, public service in their neighbourhoods and show had they had met outdoor challenges during a residential experience.
The pupils also had to show dedication to hobbies.
It is hoped to extend the scheme to other primary schools in Torbay next year.
Schools wanting to participate should contact Karen Thomson at Cockington Primary School.
