Required Course Policy is Changing

School districts are preparing for changes next year to state requirements for graduation.

The Bismarck School District recently approved changes to its graduation requirement policy to reflect changes to state law that go into effect next year. The Mandan School Board will consider similar action at its board meeting Monday.

A law approved last legislative session increases the number of credits required to get a high school diploma in North Dakota, and specifies how many credits are required in certain subjects.

Next year, students must complete four credits of language arts, two credits of science, two credits of math, three credits of social studies, one credit of physical education and one credit of fine arts, second language or career and technical education class.

For the freshmen class next year, students need to accumulate 24 credits to graduate, compared to 21 credits for juniors and 22 credits for sophomores.

Many students already meet the higher standard in Bismarck, Assistant Superintendent John Salwei said. About two-thirds of students already take more than 24 credits, he said.

Some school districts will require more credits than the state- required minimum. In Mandan, for instance, the district will require three math credits instead of two, and two physical education credits instead of one.
