Head of Top School Retires After 17 Years in the Job

The headteacher of Colyton Grammar School has retired after 32 years at the school.
Barry Sindall, who has been headteacher since January 1991, has worked hard to help young people explore their potential.
The Devon school is consistently one of the leading schools in the country, retaining its spot at the top of the national league tables.
But Mr Sindall said it was a misconception that successful schools had to be "exam factories".
"Young people are always challenging us," he said. "I think they have got better and not worse."
Mr Sindall said the main change he had witnessed in education during his headship was a shift of emphasis from how people teach to how people learn.
He said: "The schools manage more things for themselves now. The teaching approach has already changed."
During Mr Sindall's period as headteacher, the school has expanded from 430 on its roll to more than 800 pupils.
This has necessitated a substantial building programme, the majority of which was funded from school balances.
Mr Sindall said visitors had consistently remarked on the relaxed but focused atmosphere and the good relationship between staff and students.
The headteacher said he would now be able to enjoy spending time with his one-year-old grandson and watching county cricket.
He will be replaced by current deputy head Peter Evans.
"He knows the school's strengths and weaknesses," said Mr Sindall of his successor. "He will put his own stamp on the school, but I know he will work hard to develop pupils' potential."
