Chapman University College:
WHO: Gary Brahm, Chancellor of Chapman University College, is available to discuss the impact of California State University (CSU) system's potential ruling on Wednesday, November 12 denying access to enrollment for eligible California students at all 23 of its campuses across the state. Specifically, Chancellor Brahm can discuss: -- The role that private institutions and community colleges can play in helping those students turned away from the CSU system in attaining their higher educational goals -- From an educator's perspective, what are the contributing factors compelling the CSU system to limit enrollments and its impact on college-bound students? -- The affordable, non-CSU higher education alternatives that provide access to a quality education where people live -- Why it's critical, especially during an economic downturn, that adults have targeted education options which allows them to pursue a second degree or certifications in areas where employment and employment advancement is possible WHAT: CSU Chancellor Charles Reed is presenting a proposal to the university's governing Board of Trustees on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 which would limit campus enrollments to about 343,000 full-time students. While individual campuses have limited enrollments in the past, this would be the first time that the CSU system as a whole would limit enrollments to incoming students. Preferential admission would be given to entering freshman within each campus' local community or service area as well as transfer students from nearby community colleges who have successfully completed their lower-division requirements. Applicants who are entering freshman or transfer students from outside a CSU campus service area would not be given priority and could end up on a wait- list. With few exceptions, applicants seeking a second bachelor's degree, as well as transfer students who have not completed their lower division work would be denied admission. The CSU system is the largest four-year university system in the country. WHY: CSU Chancellor Reed states that the proposed enrollment restrictions are a result of Sacramento's underfunding of the university's budget which was cut in September by $31.3 million and may now face an additional midyear cut of $66.3 million because of the state's budget crisis. About: Chapman University College (CUC) has been serving the unique needs of adult learners for 50 years. CUC offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, graduate certificates, teaching credentials and extended education programs at campuses throughout California and Washington. Over 6,000 students per session enjoy convenient class times, exceptional faculty, and unparalleled student service.
