New School Year Looms What's New in the Schools

With schools opening during the next 10 days, students in the greater Baton Rouge area will see many changes in their schools. Some of those changes include:
ASCENSION PARISH
Gonzales Middle School, placing some students in single-sex classrooms.
Seven new temporary buildings at four eastside schools: Duplessis Primary, Dutchtown Primary, Dutchtown Middle and Oak Grove Middle.
EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH
Sherwood Middle School, conversion to a dedicated magnet school. Renovations, $439,000. Seven middle school attendance zones changing.
Scotlandville High School, major renovations, $12.8 million.
Capitol High School, conversion to separate boys and girls schools. Renovations, $830,000.
Forest Heights Academy of Excellence, renovations and new performing arts space, $1.2 million.
Prescott Middle School, extensive reorganization. Three middle school attendance zones changing.
Requiring higher minimum grade-point averages for middle and high school students participating in sports and extracurricular activities.
LIVINGSTON PARISH
New Literacy-Technology Center in Walker, a joint-project with Southeastern Louisiana University. The center will offer career and technical classes to high school students across the parish.
Changes to Denham Springs and Walker attendance zones; shifting 100 elementary school students among several schools, Pope said.
Prekindergarten program, moving from North Live Oak Elementary to Live Oak.
POINTE COUPEE PARISH
Closing of LaBarre and Morganza elementary schools, and School of Hope alternative school due to budget cuts.
ST. JAMES PARISH
St. James High School, new magnet program.
WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH
Outsourcing bus service to First Student Inc., estimated $180,000 in annual savings.
Adding up to 180 prekindergarten slots.
ZACHARY COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
Northwestern Elementary School, eight-classroom addition with new library and an early-learning center.
Zachary Elementary School, six-classroom addition with new administration building, library and new roof.
Advanced Placement, rather than honors courses, at Zachary High School.
PRIVATE AND SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS
Bishop Sullivan High School is changing its name to St. Michael the Archangel.
In Labadieville, in Assumption Parish, St. Philomena School closed last year, and most of the students have transferred to St. Elizabeth Interparochial in Paincourtville.
LSU Lab School is reopening its newly renovated high school wing this year, part of a $5 million construction program at the school.
