Kentucky School Districts Purchase Carnegie Learning Professional Development Services; Emphasis on Advancing Math Education Opportunities and Standards Leads 31 Districts to Research-Based Professional Development Model

Carnegie Learning, a provider of mathematics curricula and services, announced today that the Commonwealth of Kentucky's Green River Regional Educational Cooperative has purchased Carnegie Learning's Professional Development services for the 2006/2007 school year.
"Developing Mathematical Understanding" for kindergarten through third grade instructors, and "Developing Algebraic Thinking" for fourth through eighth grade math teachers, elevate the quality and effectiveness of math instruction by giving teachers a stronger understanding of mathematical skills and concepts. At the same time, the courses help instructors to teach the way research indicates that students actually learn. These services are relevant to districts using any mathematics text and/or software, and are not limited to those schools who have implemented Carnegie Learning math curricula.
The Green River Regional Educational Cooperative will extend Carnegie Learning's Professional Development to approximately 160 kindergarten through eighth grade math teachers in 31 Kentucky districts. The purchase is made with funding from the Commonwealth's Department of Education, which is committed to improving math instruction and the quality of teaching in Kentucky schools.
"We look forward to launching a three-year initiative with Carnegie Learning as one of our critical partners," said Liz Storey, Executive Director of Kentucky's Green River Regional Educational Cooperative. "There is a crucial need in our region for this kind of work with elementary and middle grade math teachers to help them move from a focus on procedural math, to teaching conceptual math. Carnegie Learning's Professional Development model is a great fit and not one that we could effectively develop on our own."
"State and federal programs such as the President's American Competitive Initiative place new emphasis upon Professional Development and strengthening the teaching integrity of the instructor," said Sandy Bartle, Director of Education Services for Carnegie Learning. "This is an area in which we excel, because the pedagogy of our research-based math curricula is so deeply rooted in cognitive psychology and the understanding of how people think and learn. Our text and software have always included training support, and we have learned over the years that our best practices are relevant to all teachers of math."
