'Anne of Green Gables' About to Turn 100

The book Anne of Green Gables, written by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, reaches its 100th publishing anniversary this year, experts say.

Anne scholar Trinna Frever said the century anniversary of the book comes at a time when intelligent female lead literary characters such as Anne Shirley, the hero of Green Gables, are in short supply, Newsweek reported Saturday.

The literary smart girl is still showing up in literature, but she's often the sidekick, Frever said. It is a reflection of a culture that's placing less value on intelligence, and also treating intelligence as a stigmatized quality.

The 1908 novel follows Shirley as she is mistakenly adopted by two siblings who wanted a boy to do farm work. The book, which spawned seven other Anne works, features Shirley showing how girls can be even better than their male counterparts.

Newsweek said the literary work's 100th birthday will be marked with two Anne musicals and a fair based on the popular novel. A parade celebrating the book already took place this month, the publication said.
