The Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography in Moscow says its deputy director was not poisoned by white powder in a letter she opened.
Svetlana Zheludeva died Saturday after suffering multiple organ failure, The Moscow Times reported. She had been in the Sklifosovsky Clinic for five days and was hospitalized five days after opening the letter.
Zheludeva's death has nothing to do with the envelope, said Vasily Ryabchenkov, the institute's deputy director for science.
A public health official said Sunday that upon analysis the powder proved to be harmless.
The letter was addressed to the institute's director, Mikhail Kovalchuk. He is a close friend of Vladimir Putin and has a brother who is a billionaire banker.
