Zimbabwe to host regional health conference
HARARE, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Health ministers of the East, Central and Southern African Health Community (ECSA) will gather in Victoria Falls at the beginning of next month for a five-day regional meeting, Zimbabwean Ministry of Health and Child Welfare said on Sunday.
"Zimbabwe will be hosting the 40th regional health ministers' conference and the 30th anniversary of the Eastern, Central and Southern African Health Community from the 1st to 5th of November 2004, in Victoria Falls," he said in a statement.
The anniversary commemoration would be held with the theme "30 years of collaboration in Health-United in overcoming health challenges."
The ministers will discuss achievements and challenges in the health in line with the Millennium Development Goals, quality of health care and improvement of medical services in the sub-region.
Other issues to be deliberated on will be promotion of healthy lifestyles to prevent non-communicable diseases especially HIV/ AIDS.
The conference will also provide an opportunity for the member states to reflect on the community's achievements over the past 30 years.
The ECSA established under the auspices of the Commonwealth Secretariat in 1974 has immensely contributed to the improvement of health in the sub-region by promoting and encouraging efficiency and relevance in the provision of health services.
Representatives from 14 ECSA countries are expected to take part in the conference.
