French President Nicolas Sarkozy and an EU delegation arrived in Moscow to discuss Russia's observance of cease-fire terms with Georgia.
The goal of Sarkozy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana is to convince Russia to pull its troops from Georgia and comply with a cease-fire agreement brokered by Sarkozy and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last month, The New York Times reported Monday.
Medvedev called for "new approaches" before the meeting, telling the Times, "A tense month has passed during which all necessary efforts have been undertaken to conform strictly with the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan. But there have been other important events. Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. There are new approaches in the way we have to move forward."
Sarkozy and Medvedev met at the Russian presidential retreat at Barvikha outside Moscow, the newspaper said, adding that the EU delegation would later fly to Georgia.
