Russian MP Says Yugoslavia Tribunal Works to NATO Agenda

Text of report by Russian news agency RIA Novosti

Moscow, 15 March: Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Duma international affairs committee, believes that the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia is carrying out the orders of the NATO countries.

The Hague tribunal's work aims to meet the objective of the NATO countries - "that the criminals are identified once and for all - they are in Serbia", Kosachev said in the State Duma debate on the chamber's statement on the death of Slobodan Milosevic.

Kosachev also said that NATO representatives "are like Caesar's wife - above suspicion".

The deputy said that the tragedy of Yugoslavia had "many layers", the crimes were committed by various parties. You cannot accuse representatives of one ethnic group alone over this tragedy, Kosachev emphasized. He also said the Hague tribunal was excessively politicized, recalling that some 80 per cent of those tried were Serbs.

Kosachev regretted that such an important international legal organization, moreover, one in Europe, which preaches the primacy of the law and the observance of human rights, should apply double standards.

Speaking of the late former president of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, Kosachev said he was an historic political figure.

Deputy Speaker from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia [LDPR] Vladimir Zhirinovskiy suggested in the Duma debate on the statement that it should say that Milosevic was killed.

He stressed that no healthy person would have been able to endure 400 court sittings over five years. In effect, Zhirinovskiy believes, the Hague tribunal caused the death of the former president of Yugoslavia.

The State Duma did not approve the LDPR leader's proposal. The deputy chairman of the Duma health committee, Nikolay Gerasimenko, said there was no reason to talk about Milosevic being killed and it would be wrong for the State Duma to make that judgment.
