Hurricane Helene's sustained winds increased to 125 mph over the central Atlantic Ocean Monday as Hurricane Gordon made a U-turn toward the east.
At midday, forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Helene was 1,090 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, moving northwest near 9 mph.
Hurricane force winds extended outward up to 50 miles, and forecasters said little strengthening was expected in the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds from the Category 3 hurricane extended up to 200 miles, the center said.
Further north, Hurricane Gordon had 90 mph winds, and was moving northeast at 20 mph.
Forecasters said a tropical storm watch or warning was possible for the Azores by Monday evening, although they expected some weakening in the meantime.
If another tropical depression becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Isaac.
