Dogs Show Off Canine Fashions in Japan

Posted on: Thursday, 12 June 2003, 06:00 CDT

Poodles, dachshunds and Chihuahuas strutted down the catwalk at a fashion show organized by a Tokyo department store to promote a line of canine costumes with price tags that would have some pet owners howling.

Eight dogs modeled looks ranging from practical to casual to formal in the 40-minute show this week at the Mitsukoshi Department Store.

Highlights included a canary yellow raincoat for $72, a Japanese summer robe for $42 and a wedding dress with matching hat for $34.

"It's the kind of thing that appeals to hard-core dog lovers," store spokesman Satoshi Shimura said.

It was just another day in the spotlight for some of the participants, who paraded in front of a crowd of 60 people.

Momo, a six-year-old Pomeranian wearing a frilly white dress with sequins, already had television appearances and calendar shoots under her collar, organizers said.
