McCain Raps White House on Katrina

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Thursday criticized the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina.

McCain was in New Orleans as part of what The Washington Times called an attempt to appeal to Middle America by showing his interest in anti-poverty efforts.

After a walking tour of the heavily damaged Lower Ninth Ward, McCain told reporters the failures associated with the 2005 storm can be traced to the top of the administration, The New York Times reported.

McCain enumerated a list of mistakes he said the White House had made regarding Katrina.

There was unqualified people in charge, there was a total misreading of the dimensions of the disaster, there was a failure of communications, he said.

McCain said never again will a disaster of this nature be handled in the terrible and disgraceful way that it was handled.

As he began his weeklong tour Monday, McCain said, There must be no forgotten places in America, whether they have been ignored for long years by the sins of indifference and injustice, or have been left behind as the world grew smaller and more economically interdependent.

It's a shame when people in your own party can gain from attacking you.
