Maryland Sues Over Fort Meade Pollution

Maryland officials have notified the U.S. Army that they intend to sue to force contamination
cleanup at Fort Meade.
Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler has sent the Army a notice accusing the military of failing to comply with a cleanup order issued in 2007 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The Sun newspaper in Baltimore reported Wednesday.
Maryland Environment Secretary Shari T. Wilson said that the Pentagon has made cleanup progress but hasn't agreed to a legally enforceable plan.
"They say they fully intend to comply but are unable to make a time commitment," she said. "So we issued this notice to prompt them to do what they say they're going to do more quickly."
The state legal action didn't receive an immediate response from the military, The Sun said.
"However, the U.S. Army remains fully committed to protecting the health and safety of those living and working both on Fort Meade and in the surrounding communities," spokesman Dave Foster said in a written statement.
