A 20-year-old surfer in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., suffered an injury to his foot after being attacked by a shark last weekend, authorities say.
Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Capt. Scott Petersohn said Sunday's shark attack came as the man was swimming at an area beach, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal said Tuesday.
The shark bit the man in his foot as he was towing his surfboard behind him and was immediately taken to the hospital by friends, Petersohn said.
The Beach Patrol official said the attack, the 17the shark bite incident in the city this year, only resulted in four lacerations.
"The wound wasn't life- or limb-threatening," Petersohn told the News-Journal. "We get a lot worse injuries of people falling on the (Daytona Beach) pier."
