Sony Plans New Role for PlayStation 3

Sony Corp. plans to unveil an online video service that would run through its blockbuster PlayStation 3, various sources said.

It would be the company's third attempt to break into online entertainment delivery, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Movielink, an online video store, was sold to Blockbuster Inc. last year. Sony Connect, Sony's attempt to rival Apple Inc's iTunes, shut down last month.

The plan to distribute Internet-available movies and television shows through PlayStation 3 makes use of the number of households that have them.

Sony has sold 13 million of the units, which are already set up for Internet uses.

The market for delivering digital entertainment has sizable competitors in AppleTV, Vudu and Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.

Microsoft's Xbox Live, the biggest rival, has 10 million subscribers, the Times reported.

After two misses, Sony has got to get a win in the digital, and I'd say on the electronic delivery side of the business, home technology expert Kurt Scherf told the Times.
