'Batman' Star Bale is Arrested

LONDON -- Actor Christian Bale, star of the new Batman flick The Dark Knight, was arrested Tuesday on allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, British police and news media said.
Bale, 34, denied the allegations in a statement issued by his representative, Jennifer Allen. The actor went to the station "on a voluntary basis," it said. He "denies the allegation, cooperated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him."
The arrest came after an incident Sunday at London's Dorchester Hotel, where suites go for $9,000 a night. A person who answered the phone at the hotel Tuesday evening declined to comment.
Bale's sister, Sharon, 40, shouted, "It's a family matter!" through a window to reporters outside her home Tuesday in County Dorset, more than 100 miles southwest of London, the BBC reports. A man who answered the door at the County Dorset home of Bale's mother, Jenny, 61, said she did not want to comment.
The Welsh-born actor was in town for Monday's London premiere of The Dark Knight, which opens in Britain Thursday. The film took in a record $158.4 million in its opening weekend in the USA. (c) Copyright 2008 USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Co. Inc.
