The Lockheed Martin Corp.'s space systems division in New Orleans says it has received a $39.5 million contract modification from the U.S. space agency.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded the contract for an external tank program employee retention plan.
Retention of the knowledgeable and skilled external tank workforce is necessary to produce the remaining shuttle hardware and safely execute all remaining contract requirements, the space agency said in a statement.
The modification brings the total value of the contract, awarded in October 2000, to nearly $3 billion and calls for the delivery of 18 external tanks that hold the liquid hydrogen and oxygen fuel for the space shuttles' three main engines. Eleven tanks remain to be delivered.
The tanks -- each taller than a 15-story building -- are the largest single component of the space shuttle and the only part that isn't reused.
