PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the Product Development Company(TM), today announced the integration of PTC Windchill with the IBM Rational Software Development platform to improve the management of the product development process for customers. The integration of PTC Windchill PDMLink(R) with IBM Rational ClearCase(TM) allows customers to synchronize software development with mechanical and electrical design data resulting in the creation of higher quality products in a shorter period of time.
Products today are developed in a complex environment that includes a mix of software, electrical and mechanical product developers contributing to an overall product development project. This multi-disciplinary environment further complicates the challenge manufacturers face to identify product development issues before release to manufacturing, minimize costly rework and avoid schedule delays. The integration of Windchill PDMLink with Rational ClearCase will enable companies to release higher quality products and shorten time-to-market. With this integration, Windchill manages the complete configuration of a product across electrical, mechanical and software development. Additional benefits include greater collaboration and faster innovation among globally distributed product development teams.
"The Windchill and IBM Rational software validation provides customers with a solution to better govern their development processes," said Scott Hebner, vice president of strategy and marketing, IBM Rational Software. "Rational ClearCase is an integral part of IBM's PLM portfolio, and the integrated solution with PTC Windchill helps customers bring better products to market more quickly."
Samsung Electronics is a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies and the world's largest producer of color monitors, color TVs, memory chips and TFT-LCDs. Samsung currently uses Windchill to manage collaboration with external suppliers as well as within the Samsung Digital & Display Interface (SDI) to provide a project management infrastructure for product development process. As part of their continued effort to maintain market leadership and push the boundaries of innovation, Samsung has further selected the integrated solution from IBM and PTC to achieve benefits including:
-- Improved product quality and support by tightly integrating software managed in IBM Rational ClearCase with the electrical and mechanical data managed in Windchill.
-- Enhanced overall design efficiency by consolidating design data typically scattered throughout the company and value chain.
-- Reduced late stage rework by ensuring all developers have up-to-date and accurate data.
"The integration of Windchill and Rational ClearCase enables Samsung to further strengthen its development process by increasing consistency across geographically dispersed teams," said Hee Sun Park, chief information officer, Samsung Electronics. "This global integration results in less rework, lower costs, and faster time-to-market, which strengthens our competitive advantage."
"The ability to re-use designs can significantly reduce software development costs across an enterprise," said Chad Hawkinson, vice president, product strategy, electronics, PTC. "This is a huge benefit to companies like Samsung Electronics and other industry leaders challenged with competitive pressures to shorten time-to-market while reducing costs and improving quality."
In related news, Windchill, the PTC solution for content and process management, has been awarded "Ready for IBM Rational Software" validation. PTC is the only product lifecycle management solution vendor to achieve the IBM designation. The Ready for Rational Software program validates that integrations between IBM Business Partner products and Rational products meet IBM's requirements for interoperability and user experience.
