A growing minority of overloaded consumers are phasing out their virtual selves and returning to face-to-face socialising. For example, 26-year-old American Gabe Henderson, who has closed down his MySpace and Facebook accounts, says, 'The superficial emptiness clouded the excitement I had once felt. It seems we have lost, to some degree, that special depth that true friendship entails.' This shift has occurred because social networking is leading to 'tech tethering', where consumers are codependent on technology for their emotional needs. People are also turned off by the corporatisation of sites such as MySpace.
