Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the organs. A disease is classified as autoimmune if the immune system cannot differentiate from foreign versus what is the body’s own tissue or cells. It is complicated how the symptoms manifest and it is continuously recurring with periods of flares and rest. Lupus can attack any organ in the body. It affects both men and women but is more common in women. The disease often manifests from the ages 15–44. Lupus crosses racial and ethnic lines, but it is more common among non-Caucasian women. Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening.
