Elon Musk announced that he is now “semi-separated” from his girlfriend of three years, Grimes, although they will still co-parent their one-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii Musk. Musk cited their seemingly separate lives now that Musk has moved from California from Texas as a primary factor in the decision.
“It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room,” he told the news outlet Page Six.
They were last seen together at the Met Gala earlier this month, during which Grimes walked the red carpet solo in a silver-and-white ensemble with matching silver mask and a sword prop. Grimes is a musician and Elon Musk, of course, is the CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and the Boring Company.
Although, according to Musk, they still love one another and will sometimes see one another, it may be that not everything is as rosy as it might look from the outside looking in. Elon Musk is known as a workaholic and a demanding boss who spends most of his time either at SpaceX or Tesla facilities or traveling around the world on seemingly endless business trips.
Grimes had previously griped that she had “sacrificed her power” to be with Musk and, behind the scenes, may have expressed annoyance at Musk’s move away from California over his battle against the state over its response to COVID-19. Her family has also criticized Musk for some of his tweets while Grimes was recovering after the birth of their son. X Æ A-Xii is Grimes’ first child and Musk’s seventh, although he lost his first son to SIDS at the age of ten weeks.
Disagreements also included exactly how to pronounce X Æ A-Xii, a name that they apparently had to modify in order to get it on a Californian birth certificate, which couldn’t support some of the characters in the name. Musk said that the Æ part was pronounced “Ash” and says that the name was inspired by favorite airplanes like the SR-71. Grimes, however, had this to say:
In the music world, not everybody seemed too sorry about the breakup. Azealis Banks suggested that she and Grimes could finally do what she claims was a planned musical collaboration that got derailed by Musk’s unfriendliness during a 2018 weekend at one of Musk’s properties in California that have since been sold.
Musk denies that he ever even met Banks. Grimes also fired back on Discord that one of her songs, “100% Tragedy,” was “having to defeat Azealia Banks when she tried to destroy my life.” So it may be safe to assume that Grimes won’t be collaborating with Banks anytime soon.
Grimes has not yet responded to requests for comment from the media about her semi-breakup with Musk. She seems to still be living with Musk, possibly until she can make other arrangements. Neither Grimes nor Musk have yet brought up their semi-separation on social media.
