Apple reportedly working on an ultra-thin iPhone 7

It may be less than 48 hours until Apple officially unveils the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, but new reports currently making the rounds online are suggesting that Apple is already hard at work on a super-thin version of their next, next smartphone.

According to Mashable and Apple Insider, a document from KGI Securities’s analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that Apple is planning to produce an iPhone 7 model that is between 6.0 and 6.5 millimeters thick – considerably thinner than the current model iPhone 6, which is 6.9 millimeters thick, and the thicker, 7.1 meter iPhone 6 Plus.

The rumored iPhone 7 will be made from extremely durable 7000 series aluminum alloy, which is also reportedly going to be used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus’ cases as well, thus causing them to be less susceptible to bending. The thin nature of the phone means that Apple will likely have to stick with the same Force Touch technology as its 2016 iPhone upgrade, Kuo said.

Ultimately, the analyst believes that Apple would prefer to upgrade to a glass-on-glass solution for Force Touch sensing, especially if the smartphones begin using displays that are even higher resolution than existing models. However, the reports suggest that this is unlikely happen in the near future, as current glass-on-glass options would make such a thin iPhone impossible.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves!

While rumors often prove untrue in the tech industry, Mashable pointed out that Kuo “has a solid track record,” as in October 2013, he successfully predicted that Apple was working on a 12-inch Retina MacBook – nearly a year and a half before it was released in March 2015.

Kuo said nothing else regarding the iPhone 7, but according to Apple Insider, expert believe that it will introduce a new chassis to differentiate from the iPhone 6 series, as the company follows a pattern of redesigning its smartphone line every two years with an S-model upgrade that is nearly identical in appearance to its predecessor in between, they noted.

“That’s what’s expected to be unveiled this Wednesday, when Apple is likely to showcase an ‘iPhone 6S’ with a chassis that appears very similar to the iPhone 6,” the website explained. The upgraded device will feature “Force Touch input, a faster ‘A9’ processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and higher resolution cameras,” they added, and come in “a new rose gold color option.”
